Madre de Dios (Peru)

Located in the Amazon rainforest in the Madre de Dios region in southeast Peru, this is a conservation project with some sustainable harvesting. Madre de Dios improves forest harvesting and management practices on two privately held forests. Maderacre and Maderyja (the two landowners involved in this project) preserve some areas of forest and use sustainable forest harvesting practices on others to improve carbon storage compared to alternative land uses in the region, which include clearing forests for agriculture. By committing to maintain forest CO2 stocks above the regional common practice, the project will provide significant climate benefits through carbon sequestration.
